Windell’s & High Cascade Merging Into One Camp “We Are Camp, LLC”
I wonder if Kevin English and Tim Windell purposely planned to confuse everyone yesterday(April 1st) with their announcement of “We Are Camp, LLC”, seems like a great way to have fun with it anyhow. When the logo popped up on my Facebook feed, I wasn’t sure what it meant, and since it was April fools day, well, I just moved on. It wasn’t until I had a peek over at Boardistan this morning that I realized what actually happened. The two largest summer snowboarding camps in North America are merging to become one. Windell’s has massive acres and facilities 15min down the road from High Cascade, which lives at the base of Mt. Hood in Government Camp with easy access to huckleberry shakes. Each camp offers a truly unique experience, and it only makes sense to quit competing with each other.
I had the pleasure of working at Windells’ back in the summer of 2000 and it was the best summer of my life to date. I knew I was lucky to barely slide into a gig as a house monitor, but I had no idea how fortunate I was until looking back on that adventure a decade later. I unofficially wore a vast array of hats that summer including bus driver, skateboard coach, snowboard coach, demo equipment guy, paintball guy, ditch digger, park crew and hot tub cleaner. I did it for pennies, and if I wasn’t four knee surgeries deep at 35 years old, I’d go for it again.
The largest difference in “on snow” atmosphere is that Windell’s has skiing, High Cascade does not. From the sounds of it, it will likely remain that way, at least this summer. Most notably on the business side, they are both privately owned companies. In 1999Vans (VF) actually bought up HCSC, but then sold it back to the directors in 2004, in which they formed a non profit. There’s a interview with both Kevin and Tim over at YoBeat for the full details.
